As well as saving you money, solar hot water heating has considerable environmental benefits by helping you to reduce your environmental footprint.
Not only will a solar system reduce New Zealand’s dependence on non-renewable energy sources, it will also help cut greenhouse gas emissions.
The Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority (EECA) estimates a residential solar hot water heating system saves on average around 1.4 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. This calculation works on the assumption that, by using solar energy, a mix of coal and gas fired electricity generation is avoided.
Additionally, by reducing the amount of electricity that is needed to heat water in commercial and home applications, solar energy reduces or delays the need for new generation plants and costly upgrades to national transmission lines.
